Here is a message from Naomi Doak of the IUCN Asia Regional Office:

Dear Network Member,

As most of you will be aware October 2010 will see the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Nagoya Japan.  As part of the continued efforts to raise the profile, awareness and protection of Temperate Grasslands the Temperate Grasslands Conservation Initiative (TGCI) will be holding 2 events at this important meeting.

1.  A half day workshop Temperate Grasslands Conservation and the role of the Temperate Grasslands Conservation Initiative will be held as part of the Interactive Fair for Biodiversity NGO/NPO Forum on Wednesday 20th of October from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Nagoya Gakuin University Gymnasium, Small Hall number 2. This workshop aims to follow up on the discussions and work from the Hohhot workshop and continue efforts to achieve increased protection of Temperate Grasslands.

We would like to invite those of you attending the CoP10 CBD meeting in Nagoya to join us at the workshop on the 20th of October from 1:00 pm to 5:00pm. Those of you who are attending the CBD meeting and would like to join us at the workshop please drop a quick email to Naomi Doak (naomi.doak@iucn.org) for further details, schedules and to provide an idea of numbers.

2.  In addition to the workshop an official side event to the CBD CoP10 meeting will be held in parallel to the CBD discussions on the 25th of October  at 6:15 pm in Room 210, Building 2 on the 1st floor. This side event aims to provide an opportunity to bring together CBD National Focal Points and CBD PoWPA Focal Points from countries with Temperate Grasslands as well as other interested parties to develop a strategy for future efforts to increase the profile and protection granted to the most altered and endangered ecosystem on the planet.

If you know of country focal points who may be attending the CBD CoP10 meeting and who may be interested in attending the side event or have other contacts to help raise the profile and efforts of TGCI we would greatly appreciate your assistance in sharing the news of these events and encouraging focal points to attend. Official invitations are being sent to National and PoWPA Focal points but with many events and issues being presented at this meeting any assistance in securing attendance would be greatly appreciated.

In addition if you have contact details of people you know who are going to CBD CoP10 and would like an official invitation sent to either event the please get in touch with Naomi Doak (naomi.doak@iucn.org) with the relevant contact details and I will send out an invitation letter.

These two events are intended to highlight the importance of Temperate Grasslands and to generate support for a resolution through the CBD process to increase the level of protection of this biome as a priority for the next decade. The workshop and side event both aim to provide an opportunity to continue to raise awareness on the issue of temperate grasslands conservation while providing an opportunity to update participants on the progress of Temperate Grasslands Conservation Initiative (TGCI) to date.

The events will also be an opportunity to:
·         undertake strategic planning and direction setting for the future of the TGCI and temperate grassland conservation;
·         enable the TGCI to harness the collective knowledge, ideas and experience of the participants; and
·         renew the support established for the TGCI at the Hohhot workshop and for temperate grasslands conservation in general.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at CBD CoP10 and other TGCI events.

Kind Regards
Naomi
